Great Resources for Apiring Writers

Are you an aspiring author? A lover of words, stories and characters? A daydreamer? A creative soul more comfortable in fictional worlds than reality?

This post is for you.

Don't Let Life Stop You From Writing Your Book!

Some of us dream from childhood of writing a novel. Some are called to it later down the road. The moment you decide to write a book life will send every conceivable interference to try and stop you. From the major stuff (divorce, bankruptcy, illness, death) to the all the little daily demands (family, friends, work, errands and social media).

But these are the moments when you need to charge forward with more resolve than ever.

I've always wanted to be a published author. It wasn't until 1997 that I began pursuing it seriously (with lapses in between when road blocks got in the way). Although it took me longer than I would have liked to publish, I always kept writing and working on craft.

I'd like to share my Top Favorite writing resources with you. There are many, many phenomenal resources available, which is why I've held off putting together a list in the past, but here are my Must Reads and You Gotta Check Outs:

3 Books

If you ask me, these days too much focus is being placed on platform and branding. So much energy goes into marketing strategy that we're not giving as much thought to the most important aspect of writing:

One of the things I appreciated most about Stephen King's On Writing is that he said you don't have to be a literary author to care about language, craft and the art of telling stories.

Hooked by Les Edgerton is about one thing and one thing only. Grabbing your readers' attention! In today's world of gadgetry and internet it is absolutely crucial that you hook your reader from page one and keep them on the line.

This cute little book is filled with practical (yet often overlooked) advice. I almost wish it was required reading before anyone could hit publish on a self-published book.

Now that the King of commercial fiction has taught us about overcoming roadblocks, plotting, revising and the overall aspects of good storytelling... And now that we know how to grab our readers attention (along with avoiding the no-nos), it's time to Edit!

Oh boy!

Self-editing for Fiction Writers by Renni Browne and Dave King is another book I wish was required reading before self-publishing. There's only so much a copy editor can do and it's up to authors to get their manuscript into the best shape possible before passing it on for professional help.

Online Writing Workshops
My #1 favorite: Gotham Writers' Workshops
It's spendy, but you pay for what you get. Incredible support, advice and critiques from award-winning and bestselling writing instructors and feedback from a talented group of online classmates.
Gotham is the Harvard of online writing workshops.
National Novel Writing Month
You have some resources now. The only thing left is to Write Your Book!
Most people have heard of NaNoWriMo these days. For anyone who ever dreamed of completing a book, this is the most Fun, Motivational (free) writing event ever conceived... and it takes place NEXT month.
To get the most out of this month, I highly recommend first reading founder Chris Baty's No Plot? No Problem! A Low-Stress, High-velocity Guide to Writing a Novel in 30 Days.
I read this quick guide in March 2005 and was so inspired afterwards that I did my own NaNoWriMo the very next month (April 2005), completing my first full length novel - a defining life moment that led to fulfilling a lifelong dream of becoming a full-time fiction writer.
It's Your Turn
Check out these resources, block out the distractions - the rest is up to you!

Cover Reveal x3: Ourean Chronicles

If you're a wild fan of the Grimoire Saga (like I am!), you are going to love this new spin-off series. The Ourean Chronicles details events in the lives of three characters we've already met in the Grimoire Saga, and today I'm helping the author, S. M. Boyce, reveal her covers.
Stone, Cedric, and Deidre are all fascinating characters in the Grimoire Saga, and I can't wait to see them in their own stories. Get ready for some exciting new perspectives on this magical world. These books have a tentative release date of winter 2015. For now, check out the covers and add them to your Goodreads list!
Here's a little hello from Boyce, explaining the concept for the Ourean Chronicles and a sneak peek of how they'll be released:

The Misanthrope: Stone's StoryThe Misanthrope - Stone's eBook

(Ourean Chronicles #1)

Before Stone trained Kara Magari or taught the First Vagabond to master the Blood loyalty, he was nothing more than a slave boy named Terric.
Terric is a curious loner hellbent on reading his master's forbidden books. When one heist goes wrong, Terric abandons his old life and runs for freedom—only to fall prey to a ruthless man named Niccoli.
Niccoli is an isen—a creature of magic from the hidden world of Ourea—and he awakens within Terric an unimaginable gift. But this gift comes with a catch. Suddenly in control of newfound power he is forbidden to freely use, Terric realizes too late he simply traded one master for another.
In Ourea, a world dominated by the gifted, few isen dare defy their masters. Until now.

The First Vagabond: Cedric's StoryThe First Vagabond eBook cover

(Ourean Chronicles #2)

Ourean legends of the First Vagabond have survived a thousand years, blossoming in pubs and alleys even as the great Bloods of Ourea tried to squelch his name. But the myths glorify the deeds and forget the man he was—Cedric, a boy from a small Hillsidian farming village.
As a young man, Cedric discovers a terrifying defect in his nature. He has no Blood loyalty, which means he can defy his king—something that has never happened in recorded history. But what begins as a flaw evolves into a strength. Citizens begin to listen to Cedric, and he discovers that if he leads, others will follow.
What begins as a bid for change in a world controlled by tradition becomes a mudslide as Cedric's cause falls apart at the seams. And after a betrayal that destroys his faith in the only family he's ever known, Cedric is forced to decide between those he leads and those he loves.

The Demon: Deidre's StoryThe Demon - Deidre's eBook

(Ourean Chronicles #3)

Deidre wasn't always an isen, but she has always been hated.
In 1814, Deidre is a Southern Belle, born to wealth and a father who loathes her. Townsfolk call her beautiful and clever. A young man named Michael calls her the love of his life. But her father calls her a demon.
Deidre has lived her life with blackouts—moments of evil she can't control or remember. She hates herself enough as it is, but her life snowballs out of control when a foreigners named Niccoli comes to town. In one heartbreaking night, she loses everything—including Michael. And it's Niccoli's fault.
That night, Deidre becomes immortal. Powerful. Vengeful. But her grief festers.
As she learns the truth about her blackouts, she begins to lose the last threads of who she was. And as long as she kills Niccoli for taking Michael from her, she's okay with that.

Empath (Flawed Book 1)

Supernatural empathy isn’t a gift, it’s a curse. Anywhere she goes, Jade’s emotions are replaced by those of the people around her.

Jade grew up in a suburb of Colorado Springs, protected from other people by her parents. Now she faces college—and the world—with nothing to shield her from unwanted feelings.

When Cam, a classmate with a major crush on her, unintentionally hijacks her emotions, Jade struggles to keep from being carried away in feelings of attraction. When Ethan, a psychopath with a thirst for fear, fixates on her, the emotional impact could be lethal.

Caught in a deadly trap, Jade must untangle the emotions and find a way to use her empathic curse to overcome this killer or be overcome by him.

Outsider (Flawed Book 2)

After a psychopath tried to kill his friends, Josh Schuyler figured 'normal' was far off. The real problem: Josh's friends have all acquired supernatural abilities, while he's still the same average guy.

Josh has always believed he was destined for greatness, but he's been out of college for two years without a clue of his purpose. After watching his friends and siblings develop superhuman traits, he wonders if he might be meant for something grand, too. Can Josh even hope for an extraordinary event in his own future? And how long must he wait for this transformation - if there is one?

When Alex met the Schuylers, she was grateful for new friends to whisk her away from her lonely life in California and give her an escape from her divorced, bickering parents and aimless future. But Josh won't drop his defenses, and Alex isn't sure she wants to trade her old life for this new, uncertain one.

Nicodemus has an amazing ability he's been milking for years to get whatever or whomever he wants. Things are going great until a young woman - Alex - inadvertently busts his latest swindle. Nic is furious when he discovers his power has been disabled, and he vows to find her in order to wreak his vengeance. She will be punished. All he needs is a little help from his friend, Ethan Black.

Josh has been waiting for his big break, or for the chance to be a hero, or just the opportunity to stand out in his own, extraordinary way.

Will Josh discover his purpose in time to stop Nic?

To Be Released Fall 2014

Pulled (A Flawed Short Story)

Eight-year-old Juniper has been labeled many things—troubled kid, orphan, runaway—but none of her foster families have known what she really is: a girl with a unique and brutally inconvenient ability to teleport.

Her spontaneous jumps are not only beyond her control, they get her into trouble. When Juniper disappears, no one believes her wild stories, so she's
stopped trying to convince them.

One day when Juniper gets pulled away, finding her way back is harder than ever. Stranded on the side of a deserted highway, she must rely on her own instincts to determine who is a creepy stranger and who she can trust.

Resourcefulness may get her home, but is getting home enough when you don't have parents that love you?

Juniper knows something most people don’t: there are others like her with unexplained abilities. Until now, she’s exercised stranger-danger caution, but maybe these people can offer what she needs.

Will Juniper find a family she can share her secrets with?

Approximately 7000 words.
Author Bio:

An avid lover of stories that tiptoe the line between fantasy and reality (even when they plunge off one side or the other), Becca J. Campbell looks for new angles on bridging the gap between the two. She holds a special place in her heart for any story that involves superpowers or time travel. Her passion is defying the limits of her own creativity.
Becca’s journey into writing began as many of her other creative endeavors do – by daring herself to try something new. The question “what if I wrote a novel?” and some hastily scribbled notes on a church handout were the inspirations that jump-started her first book. Since then, she has written half a dozen additional novels and several shorter works.
As the wife of a musician and mother of three young boys, Becca’s life is never dull. Whether it is writing, painting or knitting, she enjoys making stuff that wasn’t there before.
She also runs an Etsy shop at UpCycledChicByBecca where you can order custom painted or knitted items and more.
