Show & Tell Thursday - Bookmarks

WIN!
Show & Tell Thursday is a four week long meme taking place during Amanda Hocking's Under the Seapalooza - Watersong event.

If you haven't already stopped by, surf on over to Amanda's blog to participate AND enter to win a bundle of 10 luscious handmade bookmarks (I want!), a mermaid bookmark and one of my own Entangled bookmarks.

The Show & Tell schedule is also listed here for upcoming themes and chances to win more prizes!
I'm a bookmark hoarder. I pulled out two of my favorites. One is kinda naughty, but wicked cool. I found bookmarks made out of stamps from other countries on the Mendocino Coast in California a few years ago and fell in love with these naked ladies and dark creatures. :)

The second one was a gift from my pen pal of two decades, Elizabeth Grant Thomas, for my last birthday. With the fabulous quote: "I love the swirl & swing of words as they tangle with human emotions." - James Michener.

I stuff all kinds of things into my cookbooks (envelopes, grocery lists, tea wrappers, magnetic bookmarks my mom sends from Alaska...). The above were crammed into one of my favorite cookbooks: Veganomicon by Isa Chandra Moskowitz & Terry Hope Romero - stars of the Post Punk Kitchen and recipes that make my taste buds dance and sing!

Under the Seapalooza

Today kicks off Amanda Hocking's under water extravaganza - an event going on now through August 17. There will be all kinds of great guest posts and prizes. Today you can enter to win 1of 5 a signed ARCs of "Wake", the first in the Watersong series releasing August 7.

Be sure to check out my "Island Life" vlog: here. It's a short video about San Juan Island. My little brother, Vernon, is the greatest for endearing my last minute freak-out and editing it all together at the 11th hour.

I'm also doing a Tub Party Giveaway over at Amanda's Tuesday. These lovelies are produced right here on San Juan Island from the organically grown lavender at Pelindaba, which means "Place of Great Gathering" in Zulu. I threw in a tub tea, bubble bath, bath salts and a signed paperback of Entangled.

Check it out along with all the other fun things happening during this event.

Rant #1

Have you ever rented a house that went for sale on the market?

It SUCKS!!!!!!

Three months of getting kicked out for showings and having people randomly drive through the property while Cosmo's out playing. There was an open house for realtors last month and they dragged mud and pine needles from outside and tracked it all over our rugs and BATH MAT. My new friggin' Bed Bath & Beyond luxury memory foam bath mat.

Our furniture is always hand-me-down or used. Our night stands are boxes. So when I get something new I have a tendency of becoming anal about its upkeep.

For this afternoon's showing, Seb printed out a sign asking that people please remove their shoes. Guess what? Friggin' shoe print on the bath mat today!

We have been looking for a new rental since January. Who would have thunk it was so difficult to find something for the right price, privacy and pet friendly in Friday Harbor!

Win a Paperback copy of Entangled (US)

Aloha, romance junkies and welcome to the Summer Lovin Giveaway Hop sponsored by I Am A Reader, Not a Writer & Tifferz Book Review.

I love romance. As a teen, I used to sneak historical romance novels into my mother's shopping cart at the supermarket. I still love historical romance - especially the balls and gowns - but I have also become something of a YA romance addict.

Here are some quotes I grabbed from Amazon reviews, specifically, what readers are saying about Entangled's hero Raj McKenna.

"I loved Raj! There aren't many Indian or maybe he is only half Indian hero's, but he was magnificent." - Tiffany A.

"[Raj] may not be the cookie-cutter type that some girls go for, but he's very loyal to Graylee and has an interesting story of his own." - Cheyenne Teska

"I think of Raj as the most dynamic character in the book, but I have a thing for bad boys who are secretly endearing." - S.M. Boyce

"...let's talk about another character, one I really, really, REALLY liked...Raj! Oh Raj *sighs* I seriously have a weakness for bad boys...especially if they give steamy kisses like Raj does ;) I thought he was an amazing character...very sweet, too." - Lili Lost in a Book

"Let's just say by the end of the book I had a huge fictional crush on Raj." - Book Whispers

My little lover, Cosmo, beating the summer heat in the shade with his favorite book. :)
Enter to win a signed paperback of Entangled and matching bookmark. (US only - Sorry, International shipping is crazy expensive.)

7-12-11 Don't mind the technically challenged author here. This is my first time using Rafflecopter and I don't know how to get it to link directly to twitter for posting about the giveaway. I typed up a tweet, though, so it can be copied & pasted. Hope that helps!

Island Living

Last weekend friends from the mainland surprised us with an impromptu visit... I found out an HOUR before they arrived. One of my favorite things about company is they force you to play tourist and remind you that you live in a beautiful place. It's easy to get into a rut with the routine and pretty soon all you see are the potholes you avoid on the road during your morning commute and the 100th deer of the week.

Last Sunday I saw something phenomenal: a huge pod of Orca whales swimming right along the road as we toured the island. I was blown away. I once took a friend on a whale watching tour when she visited me in Alaska and all we saw was a fin from 50 feet away.

I watched this pod spellbound, walking down a trail to the edge of the island. There were so many and you could even hear them. It was the highlight of my week and reminder of the paradise I'm lucky to call home.

I'm excited to share more on July 24th when I participate in Amanda Hocking's Watersong event leading up to the publication of Wake. I'm either doing a photo essay (something about island life) or video. I'm aiming for video and have been experimenting with the digital camera.

A fox. (And Cosmo going berserk.)

My view of Canada. (Vancouver Island as I pan to the right - across the ocean and last body of land at the end of the video.)

The Freedom to Choose & GIVEAWAY

*Congratulations to: Yto, Darlene, Esther, and Sarah, winners of the Indie-Pedence day eBook giveaway. Emails have been sent out.*

For GraveTells Indie-Pendence Week blog Hop Event, I'd like to start out by listing what indie authorship means to me.

The Freedom to Choose:

- My titles

- Cover art

- Cover artist

- Copy editors

- Publication dates

- Price

- AND the freedom to Take Risks. I have a scene in Entangled in which a character plays a horrible prank on Graylee Perez one of the mornings she wakes up for her turn in her twin sister's body. I'm pretty sure an editor would have made me cut it. When you're indie, I feel like you have the option of writing edgier fiction and the chance to take readers by surprise.

During Indie-Pendence Week, sign up to win 1 of 4 eBooks. Winners choice of either Entangled or Duplicity. (INTERNATIONAL)

a Rafflecopter giveaway

Check out the following participants for more indie posts and more giveaways. I'm thrilled to see S.M. Boyce - author of The Grimoire: Lichgates - on here. She has a fantastic indie resource section of her blog. I also put a link to an article she did on choosing cover artists, including an interview with me about my cover process.

Best Indie Books of 2012 Semifinalist

Happy July, indeed! This morning Entangled was announced as a YA Semifinalist in The Kindle Book Review's Best Indie Books of 2012.

Semifinalists were chosen because they hooked the judges in the first few pages, were well formatted and well edited.

The TOP 5 finalists will be announced September 1, 2012.

Congratulations to the other semifinalists!
